Royal Flora Ratchaphruek, Chiang Mai

The scale of the event is unbelievable & I had planned my trip months ahead to Bangkok with the intention to travel by train to Chiang Mai to catch the sunrise over the plains & the hillside. As Pek Ling(Evie) & I boarded the plane which was delayed, my excitement grew in anticipating my pick-up at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok to get us to the train station. As the plane took off, we heard a loud racketing sound below, possibly coming from the landing gears of the Airbus, spanking new craft of Air Asia. I thought it wasnt normal at all. About an hour after we flew, there was a sudden drop & the plane experienced about five minutes of turbulence. Shortly after that, the captain announced that we were experiencing a technical difficulty & will be returning to base – which means, LCCT back in KL!!! By then, those who understood or heard the announcement, were in angst & began to pray in different tongues. So technical difficulty actually meant engine problem……

Our lives were literally in the hands of God & when His hand guided the plane to land safely, I had the shakes(hypoglycaemic symptoms). Pek Ling fed me with a Fuji apple & a fruity bar for a quick fix. I informed the ground crew about missing our connections & upon them asking for our connecting tickets, I made several calls to Bangkok & had them faxed over. Within half an hour, Air Asia bumped us on the KL – Chiang Mai flight the next morning & fed us with McDonalds before sending the rest of the Bangkok-bound passengers on another plane to resume their journey! (Bummer, I missed my sunrise over the lanna….) Kudos to Air Asia for prompt & efficient customer service! And praise God for keeping us alive!!!

The huge umbrella at the entrance of Royal Flora Expo….

Looking at the map (& each other), we were bound for an entire days walk around the 7.2km route spanned over 80 hectares. This place is huge. Never before in history has a floral expo been planned & executed in such a grand scale, possibly the only kind in the century. You would be crazy to miss this if you are an orchid-lover, let alone a nature lover. We walked & walked & walked in this great expanse of beautiful vista…..

At the orchid competition, rare & hybridised species were being pilfered by covetous orchidophiles so they had to cordon off & put people to guard these magnificent varieties……

I had to use my zoom lens in the expo!!! Sorry, couldnt capture any of the rare kind to show here so let me give you my favourites instead, the phalaeonopsis, cattleyas, bulbophyllums & oncidiums in no particular order……

The Corporate Gardens are themed gardens by countries & establishments like Toyota, gas companies & such. Overall, we must have walked more than the stipulated 7.2km because we explored the gardens & what-nots in the hot sun. The sky was so blue, there wasnt a cloud in sight. I also wondered what in the world were the people thinking about when they come, clad in jackets, pullovers or long sleeve shirts when the sun is shining brightly……

Nearing dusk, the temperature dropped & we pulled our pashminas over ourselves. Within the next half hour or so, we had to put on our jackets & wrap the pashmina snuggly around our necks. It was getting cold. And I love it!

I had a grand time, feeling so good surrounded by flora in such a huge area. We were certainly bedazzled with the flowers! Our idea of fun? Being in a country where we dont speak their language & wildly gesticulate our wants & desires when we want to buy something….. :)

More of my trip in the next post.

Happy Bird Day!

The Face Of The Lion

In this surreal garden of paradise, there lives, not just the clowns in the safety of the anemone……

…..in the slow flow of the ocean’s surge, there lurks the beauty…..

…..in the lions’ den, a site that ensnares the unsuspecting, buoyancy-challenged diver……one of the deadliest predators of the reef with poison from the spines that can kill….Garbed only in a pink shortie, I had to come face to face with…….

……..the lion itself!!!!

Much like what happens on earth, how many of us Christians are aware of the consequences of being a ‘neutral’ believer, one who doesn’t need to go to church because of self-reliance, or because they see other Christians behaving badly & become afraid of being branded as a fanatic or be associated with goody-two-shoes, or give excuses of living by example when the example is hardly an example when the blind leads the blind. Perhaps they see the church as a stifling, moral-keeping bunch of holies who shove moral standards down their throats. There are many justifications for being lukewarm.

People will brand you whatever they want to brand you. They may spend all their lives pursuing their goals but never finding satisfaction in attaining any of them. They may hate you for being holy & wait for the moment when you fall so that they can say that you are just like one of them or even worse off than they are. You will be shot down for every good thing & they will curse you till you are afflicted with their ways. You may have days where you cannot see the light nor the brightness of His rising. You decide it’s enough, you decide to stay in the sidelines & be on the reserve team rather than on the field as the defender or striker. They have beaten you to pulp with their actions & you’re defeated because you refuse to give a reason for the hope that you have in you.

But if you also suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. And do not fear their fear, nor be troubled, but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason of the hope in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience, that while they speak against you as evildoers they may be shamed, those falsely accusing your good behavior in Christ.
(1Peter 3:14-16)

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. And to the angel of the church of the Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Head of the creation of God, says these things: I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I would that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing, and do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, I counsel you to buy from Me gold purified by fire, so that you may be rich; and white clothing, so that you may be clothed, and so that the shame of your nakedness does not appear. And anoint your eyes with eye salve, so that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him and he with Me. To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame and have sat down with My Father in His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
(Revelation 3:13-22)

Just because we fall short of the glory of God, it doesn’t mean that we should stop trying to attain His standards & be set apart for His purpose. Are you hovering over the lionfish’s den with only your lycra suit on where any surge or ocean’s wave of destruction can smash you onto the toxic spines of the devourer & crush you on the rocks? Or are you still seeking refuge in the false safety of the arms of the anemone? What would you say to Him when you come face to face with The Lion & The Lamb???

Stinging Carpets from Sleeping Anemone?

After establishing dive arrangements for the next few days with Barry of Sabye Sports, I was in the water even before I recovered from the stress of travelling. The dive site we went to on the long tail boat was so densely populated with fish fries of every kind!

Fries among the seafan

There were many slumberfied anemones, I resisted myself from waking them up…..

…..because a clownfish or a skunk anemone will take up residency by tickling the mantle for it to open!

Only then would you find carpets & carpets of stinging cells sitting on the bedrock of the ocean with their tenants fiercely guarding their young…! You can find what symbiotic relationships mean here.

These are not sold in IKEA…

Lipe Revisited

It’s been a strenuous recce with 20kg of dive equipment & another 5kg odd of cameras & housing. Getting there took almost an entire day. It didn’t help that our point of contact FFK(delayed flight) on us. We met another dive operator who was on his way back to the island & established dive arrangements with him instead. What a blessing in disguise as his operation was professionally run & his wife has a bakery too!!! Yummmm…….

Before I give you what’s beneath the ocean in Koh Lipe, the last southern-most island of west Thailand, here’s showing you what the topside is all about

Evening sky…..

The waters just outside the bay of Pattaya Beach on Lipe.

I stayed in this family ‘bungalow’ of two adjoining rooms for the duration of my stay in Lee Pae Resort.

When I was in the bathroom, I shouted to my manager who was travelling with me, “Ong! There are worms in the bathroom!!!” Then he shouted back, “Don’t worry, these kind won’t bite you!” (?!???!?…..he’s got them in his bathroom too, I guess. Millipedes got too many legs for me to like them. I left them where they belong…….

Around the island……

Soon, what’s beneath coming up after my decompression time……. zzzzzzzzzz
