Tribute To Alcoh Wong

As we sat there sipping teh & kopi tarik at the quaint coffeeshop in Chinatown, Kuala Terengganu, an elderly man approached us & started talking to us about the history of how this place began. He spoke with such dignity & pride, knowing that we were tourists (a good giveaway is my hat & pareo!) but yet, treated us with great respect as we showed interest in his topics. Indeed, I was awed that a man would actually spend the time to explain to a bunch of people (including Kaseng’s two kids) about the place & the people who made Chinatown. He was from the Terengganu Chinese Association & he was researching into the origins of the Chinese in Terengganu as well as the VBP – Vietnamese Boat People & the BP -Bidung People (born in the refugee camp).

That was when I became extremely excited at the prospect of getting a lot more information about the story behind the wrecks which I’d dived two years ago. He helped the VBPs track their family members as well as the deceased members’ grave, to which they made such an adventurous trip back in time to trace hospital records & whereabouts they sent the bodies to, before they were buried. By then, I was sitting on the edge of my stool, as attentive as ever, while Kaseng repeatedly asked him to join us & sit down. He went on to tell us about how the VBPs had found freedom in Australia & other countries while maintaining contact with him. He painted such a vivid picture of things that I felt as if I was actually there in the period where they sought refuge in Pulau Bidung. He even published a self-funded book about them. I asked him for his contact number so that I could come visit him & get the book as well as a chance to document this magnimous man’s life & passion for the Chinese people. I was so encouraged to see a person so driven by his interest, to have amassed such knowledge & contributed back in the form of a publication & I wanted to acknowledge him in my work too.

He started to talk about the origins of the Chinese coffeeshop’s structure & building while showing us the old paintings & doors & architraves. He explained how these fixtures came about. He also went on to tell us the origin of the Chinese ladies’-paintings. I was so inspired & was made to feel really proud to be a Chinese.

I was so sad & shocked to find out two days ago on his website that he passed away recently on 30th May 2006. I am two weeks late. Nevertheless, I hope you would check out his site about the amazing work he’s done in documenting the VBPs & much more. May he rest in peace & may his family members be comforted in the thought that Alcoh had inspired many with his selfless giving of his time & dedication to the Chinese people in the east coast. Farewell, my inspirator….

The Syncopated Clock

I managed to get the song which I had sung in my school choir for the national competition during Pesta Muzik 1983 in which we championed, having ‘synchronised’ the sopranoes & altos with the concise beat & rhythm. Something made me recall my childhood & this is what I’ve carried with me until today!

The song was written in 1946 by Leroy Anderson, his first popular hit and originally an instrumental selection. Anderson’s original version—credited to Leroy Anderson and his Orchestra, but sometimes suspected to be the Boston Pops Orchestra, for whom Anderson worked at the time—reached number twelve on the charts, while a version credited to the Boston Pops itself hit number 28.

Wikipedia says about the structure – The arrangement calls for temple blocks to be used as the sound of the clock which is heard throughout the number. The piece is in 4/4 time; the opening establishes a perfectly regular “tick-tock” accompaniment, beginning with a roll off the orchestra’s staccato strike of an A chord, creating an expectation that it will continue. In the sixth measure, there is an eighth-note rest on the second beat, and two syncopated “ticks” are heard before the “clock” returns to its normal rhythm. As the piece proceeds, the “clock” continues to indulge in brief moments of syncopation. Some are expected by the listener (as the tune repeats the passage in which the first syncopation occurred); others are not, creating a whimsical and comic effect. The song’s basic arrangement and lighthearted tone makes it a favourite for school bands.

Being my all-time favourite where my sis, Pauline sings alto with me being the sop, we used to sing to my dad when he came to pick us up from school, whether he liked it or not (…..what are dads for??? :D ). I want to share it with you here if you could just turn up your speakers:-

There was a man like you and me, as simple as a man could ever be;
And he was happy as a king, except for one peculiar thing.

He had a clock that worked all right,
It worked all right, but not exactly quite;
Instead of going “tick, tock, tick”,
the crazy clock went “tock, tick, tock”.

The poor old man just raved and raved, because nobody could say
Why his silly clock behaved that hickory dickory way.
But now a famous man is he, He owns a public curiosity;
>From far and wide the people flock To hear the syncopated clock.

Tick-a-tock, tick-a-tock,
There’s a zing in the swing of that clock,
Tock-a-tick, tock-a-tick,
Don’t you think it’s a marvelous trick?

Ting-a-ling, ting-a-ling,
There’s a zong in the bong of that ring,
Ling-a-ting, ling-a-ting,
Don’t you think it’s a wonderful thing?

The experts came to hear and see,
But none of them could solve the mystery.
They called Professor Einstein too,
He said “There’s nothing I can do”.

But soon the fickle human race will find another freak to take its
place,
And one fine day the man will hock the poor old syncopated clock.

[Hey, daddy! I'm still singing this & you'd better get those rabbits ready for the time I get to heaven if you don't want me to sing this anymore....!] *Snigger!* *Snigger!*

Bugged Out

I made the most difficult decision ever yesterday. It was the aphids or my orchids. I had lost several plants (rare ones) to aphids because I believed in biological & not chemical control in my container garden. Despite creating a conducive environment to attract aphid-eaters, the ladybird, the kind of visitors I got was alarming. From rhinoceros beetles to bees, moths to preying mantis, katydids to A JUNGLE GECKO, some worms (yeeee…!), spiders (at least 5 kinds) & stinky bugs, I failed to get rid of the blooming aphids!!! And I’m not going to lose hundreds of dollars of orchid to aphids again!!! So I sprayed pesticide & that was the end of them all. Just like that. And to think that I had hesitated for months to do this. What an end to these destroyers.

Well, my orchids are faring well while all my other plants are growing outward instead of upwards to get the light. Some of them have rooted themselves all over the wall & pillar that I can’t rotate the pot to give them even distribution of sunlight. I have a hoya that is about to attach itself to my aircon compressor & I would have to find it a climbing fence soon.

Let me make out to you why I love them & yet accord a lot of respect(a nicer word to describe fear…) when they get too near….

They are so unusual. No two are the same. Just when you think you’ve seen one, you haven’t seen anything yet.
There is no denying that this bug is the most unusual & the most beautiful specie I’ve ever seen. It’s got a shield almost like a space shuttle & the golden shimmering colours on the carapace are out of this world!!! What were You thinking of when You created this, God? It’s so cute! And You sent it to my windscreen!!!!

Not all are cute. Some are hairy & please don’t say it’s ’cause I have lack of hair. Look at the size of this bug on my arm!

And a close-up after I transferred it onto the chair’s railing….

Ok, some bite & sting but those I’ve strained myself to take are not so bad. Like this rhino visitor…

Knowing that I would have prevented a whole lot of other insects & critters from coming by the smell of the pesticide, I just had to do it. I no longer have a dog that catches grasshoppers/locusts nor skinks that lives to devour some of the the pests & the occassional owl that hunted rats in my previous garden….. :-(

Perhaps, the mantis on my orchid would be the last visitor for a long, long time….. please forgive me, Lord.

Playing With Themes

It’s been six months since I’ve started using WordPress engine & I love the way the Open Source community contributes & upgrades the application by designing unique plugins. I’ve selected this theme based on the widget-usability & modified the header image to something I’ve taken underwater. Just in case you were wondering what on earth the creature is, it’s a beautiful sea slug, being responsible for my long, bottom times due to its sheer small size & awkwardly-positioned bodies for me to photograph. Thank God for my F1.8 Super Bright lens on my Olympus, being ever ready to capture micro details.

Candle That Would Burn A Lifetime

This is Mr. Candle. He is one amazing character who never cease to bring light & life to those who are in need. He is also very much sought after by those who seek him for other purpose. He was the nicest, finest, devoted candle ever made & a piece that would shame his rivals.

One fine day, he met Miss Candle, who was on a journey to find the source of light so she could light up for the nations who are still living in darkness. It was a journey that would make her complete. In the process of lighting up one another’s life, Mr. Candle fell sick. He was confused as to what this source of light meant & if he should find it too. To do that, he had to give up a past. A past that had many hurts & disappointments & betrayals. In this process, he fell further into the darkness. Miss Candle continued to care for him & to nurse him back to life. She burned for him. She halted her journey despite knowing of the lost time. She became the flame to hopefully ignite Mr. Candle to see that he has a journey too.

Over time, Miss Candle fell into despair too. She burned & burned but saw no light in Mr. Candle who held onto a past which served to blister the wounds that Miss Candle suffered in her past. She knew she would lose the path if she continued burning alone. Mr. Candle was nowhere near her journey. His refusal to understand & burn together with Miss Candle, caused her to lose heart & melt away. He did not know how to handle hot wax.

With a heavy heart, Miss Candle had to let go of the burden for she has reached the end. She would lose her source if she doesn’t abide in the safe recesses of the Pot of Wax underneath the rainbow. She would have loved to have Mr. Candle burning side by side with her & filling up each others reserve as they journeyed but he doesn’t know how to.

Now Miss Candle has to be revived & remoulded into a stronger candle, to walk the long, winding path to bring the source of light to those who had never seen it. As for Mr. Candle, the hope is not lost as the source of light is found in abundance for those who seek the right path & willing to brave it.

Love Is Kind

TO ALL THE SINGLES,
Love is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the more it eludes you. Watching it fly is more beautiful than losing sight of its gracefulness when you run after it. Love can make you happy but it often hurts. Love’s special when you find out that the person you love feels the same way about you BUT ONLY MORE.

TO ALL THE NOT-SO-SINGLES,
Love isn’t about becoming somebody else’s perfect person. It’s about finding someone who lets you become the best person you can be.

TO ALL THE CASANOVAS & CASANOVETTES,
Never say “I love you” if you don’t care, nor talk about feelings that aren’t there. Never touch a life if you mean to break a heart. The most cruel thing one can do is to let the other fall in love when there’s no intention of catching one fall.

TO ALL WHO ARE MARRIED,
Love is not about “your fault” but “how can I make it up to you?” It’s not about “where are you?” but about ” I’m right here.” It’s not about “how could you?” but about “I understand….” It’s not about “why can’t you be more like this?” but about “I’m thankful for what you are.”

TO ALL WHO ARE ENGAGED,
The true measure of compatibility is not the years spent together but how good you are for each other.

TO ALL WHO ARE HEARTBROKEN,
Hearbreaks last as long as you want & cut as deep as you allow them to go. The challenge is not how to survive heartbreaks but to learn from them. It’s painful to see the one you love move on but it’s more painful to know that the one you love is unhappy with you. Love hurts the most when the person you love has no idea how you feel.

TO ALL WHO ARE STILL HOLDING ON,
The sad thing about life is when you meet someone, fall in love, only to find out in the end that it was never meant to be & that you have wasted years on someone who wasn’t worth it. If he/she isn’t worth it now, he/she is not going to be worth it 10 years from now. LET GO.

Bangkok With Speed

Since then, I’d been contracted to a project with the country’s biggest travel agency & within the first two weeks, I was on the plane to Bangkok.

Upon reaching, I checked into the biggest hotel in Bangkok called Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel

after which I was pleasantly surprised by my room with jacuzzi.

I collected whatever information I could with the help of Noi at the Thai Dive Expo

and allowed myself to indulge the Thai Food in Bangkok that my host has graciously taken me to savour……

Then I took some time to explore the facilities of the hotel & managed to capture this before I flew back…..

So forgive if I’m experiencing a brain-drain at the moment. Rest assured there are lots of things brewing in my mind & I can’t wait to share with you but I’ll save it for when I’m a bit more settled in.

Treasure Hunting

Since my last entry, I’ve gone geocaching (treasure hunting using GPS) in Lake Gardens with Jesus & was led by His
